Don't Smoke Around Your Apple

Found on the Internet
From [info]darkest_light: Autocompleteme. Trust the Googlers to know where the really good stuff is. *grins*

Michio Kaku
I can never really complain very much about someone who popularizes science. I mean, I'd rather someone popularize science than to subscribe to thoughts like, "Trees cause pollution." (Yes, W, we're looking at you.) So seeing Dr Michio Kaku's book Physics of the Impossible turn into a series on the Science Channel? Really kind of awesome.

Reading
I just updated my Goodreads list with as many books as I could remember on my e-book reader and also my USB memory stick. If I'm doing this right, I have definitely read over 150 books since getting the e-reader, and that was only this year. ^_^; That is, if I'm doing this right...

Grad School (Again)
I really need to make my mind up on this, but I can't just jump into a decision...
I never paid much attention to architecture programs before (I can't do art, and everyone says you need art)... but I never knew urban planning was part of architecture. ^_^; Look at this faculty list! Specifically, this man: he does land use-transportation planning and policy, and travel behaviour!

Oh god, research into mass transit without having to do a transportation engineering or business degree--how did I take so long to find this? *facepalms* Bodes badly for my own research performance, I'd say... but oh god I get to study this in grad school for real in Denver? *starts chewing through the journal* (I'm not even looking at graduate stipends... oh dear.)

Out With the Old, In With the New
Warner Brothers is letting people trade DVD discs in for Blu-ray. Hmmm. *checks to see if she has any movies on that list* Bah, nothing. The biggest thing I'd want to trade (What Dreams May Come) is from Polygram. All my other movies are from Buena Vista, Sony, 20th Century Fox, and United Artists. I guess Warner really needs to work on their portfolio, huh?

Don't Smoke Around Your Apple
Because you might not be able to get it serviced. Hey, I'm all for stopping people from smoking, but isn't this a little... I dunno, out there?

[ETA:] In Search of Pay Equity
*sighs* Sometimes you just can't win.

I'm buying myself some new stuff!

First of all, I'm going to get a camcorder so now I can make annoying Youtube videos like everyone else does. If it does well, I might even do some 'vlogging' because it might end up being faster to make little updates about my life that way. I have already decided on buying a Flip MinoHD even though I know it is not the best camera out there. Looked at the superior Kodak zi8, but ultimately the flimsy usb connector pisses me off, its not that small and I don't really need HD quality I need portable and rugged.

Here's the big question, I need a new portable mp3 player and I want one with a massive hard drive that I can put literally all music from all of my computers onto. But I'm still thinking of what to get.

iPod- If you're suggesting I get this, please tell me which one and why. Keep in mind I don't use itunes, it breaks my desktop and mac products in general hate me. But I'm interested in the app store through the Touch. But also, giant pretty screen that might get cracked easily :(

PSP- I've heard its a decent mp3 player and I can replay FFT with pretty cut scenes.

Zune- ???

Other- What else is out there, probably a lot. I would like something small, huge harddrive, playlists a plus and rugged is probably better since I'm active and clumsy.

Opinions welcome as my search continues...
Title: Sightless
Authors: Neko Kuroban (blueinkedlines) and Sister Grimm Erin (sistergrimmel)
Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Summary: It is simple to accept defeat as it comes: keep your head down, step back in line, fulfill your duty. Thalia Grace, however, just keeps chasing the storm.
Author's Notes: Sightless began as a collaboration between Erin and myself almost a year ago. It...blossomed into a fan novel with a detailed, intricate universe beyond the text and a number of side-stories. Mostly plotted before the release of the final book in the series, it takes the place of The Last Olympian with a number of significant changes.

Sightless is currently undergoing heavy revision to strengthen the early chapters, to expand the universe it takes place in, and to incorporate everything my co-author and I wish to include. It will probably end up being around one hundred fifty thousand words when all is said and done. This is an exclusive sneak preview of the first half of the first chapter. Enjoy! ♥

Licensed to drive

I have an Ontario driving license!

[Extended intermission for lengthy, if disappointingly choreographed, dance routine to be performed]

To my amazement, the response to my desperate inquiry revealed that while no road tests were being performed during the strike, a few select centres in Ontario were doing license exchanges. I was pointed towards a website which declared my nearest open test centre was about an hour's drive away and to be prepared for a very long wait, no guarantee of service and maybe swine 'flu. So, armed with a book, a laptop and a box of tissues, I headed off to the town next door to discover the queue ... was outside. Was it really so long that the whole waiting room had filled up before 10:30 am? Actually no... it transpired that this was a rather bizarre way of punishing people who were been served during the strike. We will see you .... but you have to stand outside in the Canadian early-winter looking through the windows at our heated, empty waiting room. Maybe the union found it upsetting they could not see all the frustration they were causing so decided to design an exhibit.

The wait was about an hour; allegedly I had picked a good day since I was told inside that the previous week had seen lines four to five hours long. Oddly, I did not have to sit a drive test (which is fortunate given the strike) or even a written one; I just had to relinquish one of my driving licenses (I hold both USA and UK). Since my US one was expired, I thought this was a good swap. Admittedly, it might have been better to offer up my British license since it had more years on it, but I also doubted the promise that I could switch my Canadian license back to a UK one when I left. "Mutual exchange" or not, I would not put it past my own country to make me sit their notoriously difficult drive test again just for the dry laughs that define my culture.

I left with a piece of dot-matrix paper in my wallet and a photo-card in the mail. Hurray!

I still need insurance. I called a few places and the results were ugly. Perhaps I could hire a good looking Chippendale driver instead.

Incidentally, my new phone can send photos it takes directly to an online scrap book attached to my account. I find that kinda clever.

Sightless teaser!

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 8:02 PM
Some of you may or may not know about the fanfiction Sightless.
Summary:
It is simple to accept tragedy as it comes: keep your head down, step back in line, fulfill your duty. Thalia Grace, however, just keeps chasing the storm. A high-octane adventure story of unlikely beginnings and even more extraordinary results. Co-written with Neko Kuroban. Percy/Annabeth. Thalia/Luke. Unrequited Apollo/Thalia. Apollo/Artemis. Feedback greatly appreciated.
More information:
It's going through revision. This part was written solely by my co-writer, Neko Kuroban- I can take no credit for it other than moral support. The teaser is merely a sample of what is to come- first scene (scene, part, chapter, book) on Friday (the one after the American Thanksgiving). We're satisfied with how this has turned out, and we hope the readers are too. Appreciation for reading this and we hope you will click the link- it's around a thousand words.

Another day, another link to awesome new Percy Jackson movie stills.

What we learn from these is that a.) Percy gets a tattoo when he's claimed or something, which I would love to see him explain to Sally b.) Annabeth is a fierce bitch. Which, of course, we already knew and c.) Logan Lerman needs to turn 18 already so I can stop feeling like a creep. Goddamn we got a good looking leading man...er, boy.

Yeah, all right, I'll do something productive for once instead of squeeing about PJO online...

*shuffles off to class*

The Jazwares product line will include action figures and accessories inspired by the adventure-fantasy film, which hits US screens on February 12th, 2010.

"The adventures of Percy Jackson in this very exciting world where the Greek gods walk among us, lent itself very well to creating a unique product line," said Laura Zebersky, executive vice president sales, Jazwares.

"We are incredibly excited to be a part of this first film adaptation of the popular novels and look forward to seeing fans' reactions to our highly detailed line."

Lora Cohn, VP US Licensing of Fox Licensing added: "Jazwares’ team of designers captured the unique characters and settings Percy Jackson encounters on his adventure.

"We’re pleased to partner with a company so adept at translating such an event motion picture into fantastic products fans can enjoy.”

The Jazwares line will include single 4” figures of Percy and Grover; 5” Medusa and Zeus; and 7” Hades. Also available will be a 2” two-pack assortment of figures, 24” Sword, and a light up pen.
