Being An Air Traffic Controller

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 1:47 AM
Calorie Counting
It took me this long to find out New York forces restaurants and other food outlets to display calorie counts! *facepalms* New York suddenly became that much cooler in my book. In other news, TGIF has suddenly become very much a no-go zone for me. Just look at the calories!

Yesterday I had an Oreo shake, half an order of Sesame Jack chicken strips, and a half brownie dessert. That probably comes up to two days' worth of calories. T_T Does anyone want two lunchtime stamp cards for TGIF with 3 stamps each? Two more stamps allows you to get a 500-yen discount...

Air Traffic Controller
OMG why is this game so addictive? Damn, air traffic control is FUN. Randomly, having flights listed as Departed" amuses me. *laugh* Now, to stop causing ground and mid-air collisions... T_T I think I need to do like the real air controllers do, and have slips of paper representing each plane. Then I'd know who was using what runway. Damn this holding pattern in the sky. *groans*

Also, it should be illegal to have four flights incoming and yet have no gates available for parking! What sort of airport only has four gates when they clearly handle more landings than that? Runways are not my problem, gates for parking are! T_T

test prep

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 6:37 PM
I realized halfway through today that it is Wednesday, not Tuesday. Then I rapidly unspooled. I really need it to be Tuesday. Could someone arrange that? Because I have this final exam on Sunday, and there is simply no way I can push the required information into my head by then. Probably going to class during the semester would have helped, but it's a bit late for that now. I still have five more lectures and six sections to read, and they are inconveniently in Hebrew. Then there are the practice tests to take. I took one and found out it's all a lot of miserable memorization. Bother. Some of this is review from last semester, but that information seems to have dripped out of my ears since I last tried to access it. Meanwhile, I have noticed that Shabbat is annoyingly positioned between me and my test. I wonder if God would mind if I moved it to Tuesday, just this once?

If I study any more my brain is going to explode. I really should have learned some of this stuff during the semester. This is bad.

Harry Potter (The Movie)
It seems like the f-list is enjoying HBP. I guess I should bother [info]dr4b about going to watch it together after all. ^_^ Next Wednesday where? Ikebukuro okay, or is there somewhere else you'd like to go?

Simple Things For Simple Minds
How sad is it that I feel motivated to write letters and postcards simply because I have a shiny crystal pen? *facepalms* [info]artsytigger (ex-roomie Jade) was back in Malaysia recently, and got me a lovely pen as a souvenir. The ink flows surprisingly smoothly, and writing with this is actually a pleasure. Watch me finish the ink on all these postcard/letter requests! ^_^;

Yokohama
[info]doubt72 and I were supposed to go yesterday, but we postponed it one week because his friend was busy. I can't wait to see those huge spiders. [info]doubt72 finds it bemusing that I'm this excited about seeing huge spiders, but that really is what's drawing me to Yokohama right now. I wonder if they move? ^_^ It would also be fun to get on a ship or two--I think some ships are docked in port and open to the public, and I love wandering through ships... Then again, there's also the Ramen Museum, which would be fun for [info]doubt72. I wonder if we'll actually have enough time to do everything?

Generally Content
Life is good. Even though the weather proves to be trying, as is par for the course during Japanese summers, it's easy to forget the heat of midday when I'm sitting here enjoying the cool evening breeze. I wonder there's a story about this feeling inside me? It's been so long since I've felt like writing.

Yosh. Shower now, and then writing letters while the mood grips me [edit: mood left, but I'm still nice and mellow, so random administrative things online and off it is, preferably while catching up with some of the torrents still pending on my hard drive].

ETA: A Kindle In Every Backpack
Following up to this post: personally, I don't see why textbooks can't be published in looseleaf format and sold with standard holes punched in them. I could then only bring one or two chapters with me to school and leave the rest at home. The benefit of having books, and the benefit of smaller backpacks... I think this is a win-win situation myself, but what say the rest of you?

ETA2: Livejournal Spam
... okay, no more posts today. REALLY. *groans* I'm... going to find something non-Internet to do.

Proof That Life Is Not Fair

Proof That Life Is Not Fair
Accompanied [info]doubt72 to the immigration office so he could get his re-entry permit. Single trip, waiting was less than 30 minutes, and he walked away within five minutes with everything done. Bah. (Then again, it was only a re-entry permit, whereas in my case I usually go for "extension of stay", which does require a return trip.) We'll see how [info]doubt72 fares when he finally needs to extend that student visa of his... ^_^

DDR
Exhausted. 600 yen worth, and I finally attempted the Difficult songs. I'm definitely not in top form--sight-reading was much better than second-tries. This is what I get for going in on four hours of sleep! Almost failed out twice (one was Trickster, 7-star difficult, for which I feel really stupid about), but I managed to hang on and pass anyway, so it wasn't as if I lost anything. ^_^ Cs and Bs today. I think I managed one full combo on Basic, though, so it wasn't a complete loss?

On the sevens, I have to concentrate on the arrows, and there's no time to add flourishes or anything. >_< If I want to do performance dances, I can't go any higher than 6 stars, it would seem. (Basic's far better for performance than Difficult, but doing them on Difficult would make them cooler to watch.) Time to decide how to perform and which songs to perform on, I suppose. Everyone else is amazing at DDR, so I never really feel like I should get on the panels when we do group things.

Some Like It Hot
Today was a scorcher. *wails at how hot it was* It's only going to get worse from here, too. [info]doubt72 is leaving for Denver in two weeks--I wish I were going with him [ETA: instead of following at the end of August], and it's not just because I'll miss him. I think I might gladly take altitude sickness in trade for this heat at the moment.

On the other hand, it was nice and cool when I got out of the arcade. I walked home from Ouji, and it only took me about 25 minutes (at a very leisurely stroll). It was nice not having to rush somewhere. ♥ [ETA: Pulled my desk backwards, and managed to get myself seated in the wind path between my two windows. Oh man, glorious wind. I will miss this apartment, honestly--I love it here, but if I have to choose between this apartment and living with [info]doubt72 I'm afraid the apartment will have to go. The things I do for the man...]

She Works Hard For Her Money
This working-to-eat thing is BS. >_< Mother was right. I'd better start really saving up money so that I can at least try and have some form of fixed income to supplement myself, so I can work a little less and spend more time on useful things. It's always good to have a little income of one's own that's independent of everything else.

The rainy season (Tsuyu / つゆ / 梅雨 or however you'd like to write it; it's wet, that's the point.) in Japan was officially declared to be over yesterday. Weather, it seems, is not above Japanese bureaucracy. Somehow that makes me feel slightly better about my bank account.

Vote for Morgana as HBIC! (Last Time)

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 5:59 AM
So thanks to those of you who voted for Morgana, she did make it to the Top 5 in sunshine_hippie HBIC (Head B*tch In Charge) competition, which I think is an honor in itself. It looks like she probably won't make it any further, but if you'd like to still support her one more time and help her go out with more of a bang numbers-wise, please vote for her below if you haven't already!

MORGANA LE FAY is the Ultimate HBIC!

Voting ends July 15! (So not much time...check to see if it's still up)

Mobile Computing Is A Luxury

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
*panting*
High of 34C today, and yet I am indoors with the windows open to let in the breeze (thank goodness there is one). Going out with [info]doubt72 later to show him where the Immigration Office is, which is why I'm doing this--need to get used to the temperature outside instead of sitting indoors with air-conditioning. I will say this--today I'm going out with the scrunchie in place and my hair tied up, because it's far too hot not to. First public appearance of the scrunchie... man, I look weird with my hair up. T_T

Wisdom Online
Love isn't enough to keep a marriage going. I guess wild monkey sex is still the best way? Also taken from that study: "a husband who is nine or more years older than his wife is twice as likely to get divorced." T_T There goes my older-man fetish.

This Is Why Sharing Music Can Land You In Jail
Kevin Cogill was sentenced for posting Guns-n-Roses songs on the Internet five months before they were released--a full album, with full tracks. Widely-circulated, too. I feel for the Guns-n-Roses, actually.

Dell Computers
Proof that Michael Dell is a savvy businessman. Dell does one thing very well, and I personally don't think they need to do any more.

Got Robots?
The Australian Defence (sic) Science & Technology Organisation (DSTO) and the American Research Development & Engineering Command (RDECOM) are organising MAGIC 2010, or Multi Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge. Have at, roboticists.

Mobile Computing
Question: when it's all-but-guaranteed that [info]doubt72 and I will have fibreoptic internet in our new apartment (I don't see him not getting it *laugh*), Saeki becomes a bit of a luxury product I really shouldn't continue to have. At the same time, all phone plans are going to cost me about as much, anyway, so maybe I should just stay the way I am? *winces* Maybe I'll cancel Saeki when my contract comes up for renewal in January, and finally buy a proper smartphone instead? There's always the Dual Diamond, or the eMonster, which, while not as good as Saeki, will do in a pinch. (Oh no, I have to go shopping again?) I could get EM Homeaccess instead, and thus get a huge cost saving when it comes to Internet, but that's ADSL, and we know how reliable ADSL can be...
